doodoo doodoo dweeEEEEEEEEEE!

i know, i know, everybody loves youtube so much now. i found this and spent the next three hours watching random shit. this was the show we actually saw which makes it that much cooler. god bless the interweb and people sober enough at shows to figure out how to work teh digital video part of their cameras.

also, i missed this when it aired, and i was glad to get to watch it. i would have been so nervous and totally choked, but she just shines. i think this girl's got the moxie to make it in the rough and tumble world of hollywood. go diablo!

and yes, i am aware of how totally lame my love of and nostalgia for this video makes me...and at this point in my life it prolly dates me a little too. but i can't help it! doesn't it make you want to get up and do the carlton dance? and don some legwarmers! and watch flashdance!

back from the brink, baby!

back from the brink, baby!, originally uploaded by Bluemomar.

here tis. it took him 6 hours to take this one down. it's been a while since he took down a big one and he needed it in many ways--hot cash infusion, big confidence boost, and nothing is as sexy as a guy who just won a cool, quarter-of-ten-thousand-dollars in a single shot. i tried to stay up to watch him, but i seem to still be recovering from the creeping crud and am exhibiting a preternatural ability to sleep like 18 hours a day. so i went to bed and told him to just yell really loud (not a problem, as he is given to poker related outbursts anyway) if something good happened. as i was drifting off i heard an exuberant "WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOAMILLIONCHIPS!!!!!" i mumbled "goodjobhoney" and rolled over to pass out. some time later, i'm not sure how long, i heard a much longer victory song/dance being performed in the living room. at that point i was sleep-immobilized, but the door to the bedroom flew open and he declared that they had reached an impasse and decided to chop when it got down to three dudes (this is where they pool the top three prizes and split the money kinda based on a points system of how many chips each one has--his take was about $2500.) he said if we didn't need the money (and as much as possible) so badly that he would have seen it through to the end and tried to take down the crazy player who ended up in first, but he didn't want to risk walking away with only $1500. it's like doyle says (and this is one of my favorites): tournament poker is really a lottery, it's just that more skillful players have a lot more tickets. does it sometimes make me hella nervous that our livelihood depends so heavily on a lucky turn of the cards? sure, but it's so exciting when we are literally down to our bottom dollar and things come out okay. w is a clutch player and i had a good feeling about it when i went to bed last night. of course, i've had good feelings before that didn't come through, so i am still thanking our lucky stars. good juju!

wherein i drop out of law school and become a professional music see-er

the next few months are ridiculous, musically speaking. if only i was a 3L with a job who, to quote eminem, just don't give a fuck. sadly, i have to continue giving a fuck a little longer. but check this shit out, i have to compile this list partly to make y'all drool with jealousy and partly to help myself decide what i am going to muscle it up to go see:

4/02 Derek Trucks Band (The Man who would be King of the Slide Git-fiddle--was playing that bad boy since before he could walk, the Scion of the Allmans, and if Susan Tedeschi ever kicks him to the curb, I would be willing to help him feel better about it)
4/03 Greyboy Allstars (lords of acid jazz who rarely tour and are coming too close to pass up)
4/05 Cracker [unplugged] (high school flashback, man!)
4/06 North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson is my super secret delta blues man boyfriend and we are going to have a million little babies)
4/08 Blackalicious featuring Fatlip and the Lifesavas (I have been told that they tore the roof off the mothersucka last time they came to c-ville and would really like to be there when they do it this time)
4/11 Neko Case (her voice haunts my dreams, the good ones and the bad ones. i have been sposda see her like four times now and never made it. this one is a must to me)
4/13 Ween (one of W's faves. i have come to like them some)
4/18 The Disco Biscuits (this one should be easy to pass up as it's sold out, but they do rule the school)
4/20 Robert Randolph (do y'all know how to march? don't worry if you don't, you can learn!)
4/23 Wilco (need i say more? i know we just saw them, but it was so breathtakingly, almost painfully beautiful that this one will be a hard one to pass up)
4/26 Particle (i haven't seen them since a very bleary but somehow wide awake 8am set at bonnaroo--the weird clowns from Galactic came and danced while they played)

plus there is a host of shit that i have already had to miss or will soon have to miss. i really wanted to make it up to alexandria to see jenny lewis and the watson twins, but that ain't gonna happen. in related news, blake sennett and the elected played c-ville earlier this week and i couldn't go. we missed the silver jews after we got back from FL (they played that thursday and we were too spent, both physically and financially, to make it to that one. plus it was sold out but that was the least of our worries. they rarely tour and apparently put on an incredible multimedia presentation type show. bummer)

and in other news, money woes are temporarily abated. i will try to post the screen cap i did of w's big win. it doesn't seem to matter how much money we have to throw in to the gaping maw of our life, it always demands more. but this should give us some breathing room.
